First published in 2011, Anya's Ghost is a brilliant graphic novel by Vera Brosgol. Focusing on young-adult readers, the book delivers an exciting coming-of-age story of a teenage girl and a ghost. It won several awards including the Harvey Award 2012 as the “Best Original Graphic Publication for Younger Readers”, 2011 Cybils literary award in the Young Adult category, and the “Best Publication for Young Adults” of 2012 Eisner Award.

The story in Vera Brosgol’s graphic novel Anya’s Ghost follows the story of Annushka “Anya” Borzakovskaya, a teen Russian émigré girl living in the United States. She finds herself unpopular among the other kids and goes through a pretty rough experience to find her place at school.

During this difficult time, Anya finds an unexpected friend. She meets Emily, the ghost of a teenage girl who died nearly 100 years before. The two of them build a pretty odd friendship. Seeing how Anya is quite unhappy with her life, Emily tries to make things better for Anya. Emily then tries to make Anya more popular and be happier. In doing so, Emily somehow becomes manipulative and controlling. This situation leads Anya into a quest in discovering what really happened behind the death of her ghost friend.
