The second chapter in Alison Bechdel’s graphic novel, Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic, starts with the death of her father. Most people believe that it was a suicide. Despite questioning whether it really was a suicide, Bechdel contemplated that it was easier for her and family to believe it as such.
In this 2nd chapter (Happy Death) Alison Bechdel then recollects her parents’ earlier stage of life. Her father was in the army and was stationed in Europe. Her mother went to Europe to marry him. However, when her grandfather passed away, Bechdel’s father was forced to go back home. From that moment, her father inherited the family funeral home service business. She and her brothers coined the nickname “Fun Home” for their father’s business.
