Read Craig Thompson’s Habibi Graphic Novel
First published in 2011, Habibi is an epic graphic novel written and illustrated by Craig Thompson, American artist and author famous for his work Blankets. The book is phenomenal and received many praises, especially for its marvelous artworks. On the other side, the book is quite controversial for its depiction of Islam, Arab, and Arab culture.

In its 672 pages, Habibi follows the story of Dodola and Zam in their quest in the middle of a fictional Islamic fairy tale landscape. They are children who manage to escape slavery. Both kids are bound to each other by chance, by circumstance, and by the love that grows between them. Later on in their journey of life, they are torn apart and undergo many transformations as they grow into new names and new bodies, which prove to be obstacles to their love when they later reunite. They struggle to make a place for themselves in a world fueled by fear, lust, and greed; and as they discover the extraordinary depth—and fragility—of their connection.

With Habibi, Craig Thompson presents us a contemporary and timeless graphic novel about a love story of astonishing meaning: a tale about our relationship to the natural world, the cultural gulf between the first and third worlds, the shared heritage of Christianity and Islam, and, most potently, the magic of storytelling.
